Colonial Redwork QuiltSince old redwork quilts are very hard to find and are expensive, I felt that I would just have to make one for myself. It was thrilling to receive permission to share these designs. The patterns were first published in the Pantagraph Newspaper in 1926. In 1999 the newspaper again published the patterns. The quilt depicts early American history. There are 24 designs and I will be adding a new one every 7-10 days. Since the quilt originally used 9x9 inch blocks, these designs will be approximately 6 inches square. To make a finished quilt about 64x86 inches, you will need to cut strips 4 inches wide for the sashing, 6 inches wide for the side borders, 4 inches wide for the top and 6 inches wide for the bottom border. To make a double sized quilt, alternate the embroidered blocks with 9 inch plain squares. The side borders should be increased to 10 inches wide. The quilt should finished to about 74x86 inches. After you finish embroidering the block, find its center and then cut the block to 9.25 inches square. Join the blocks using a .25 inch seam allowance. If you use white fabric for the blocks, blue fabric for the sashing and borders, and embroider using red thread, you will have a patriotic quilt. This is the order of the blocks:
1. The Norsemen
2. Indians 3. Home Life of Indians 4. The Santa Maria 5. Cabot 6. Balboa 7. Champlain, the French Explorer 8. Henry Hudson 9. Sir Walter Raleigh 10. The Meeting House 11. New World Missions 12.
